in learning how to write my own music, i several times would wake up with a melody or a set of chords or a combo going through my head and get up to write them, dashing to a pen and paper and Rufus (my guitar) as quickly as possible before it disappeared. i would then construct the beginning of something, and have to leave to do Something, and continue working on it in my head...

... only to realize that it already sounds like some song i already know, by someone else.

never before have i ever had it happen in reverse, that i write something, and then literally YEARS down the road, come across a song that i know that there was NO way i could have heard before or during the writing of a song, but that it sounds IDENTICAL.

such is the case with the firstest song i almost wrote to completion, "hidden truth", and Dandy Warhols' "sleep". when i first heard the picking of the guitar and how it was going, the speed, the inflection and everything, how it does it normally one time through the chord progression, then rushes it a bit during the second... i was shocked that we had actually recorded my song, i certainly hadn't remembered it... then it clicked that i HADN'T recorded it.

freaking WEIRD.

any of The 'Stairs has access to the song, check it out.... it's freaking creepy. i was even singing along to it, but with the words i had written... definitely drastically different from theirs...

pfft. i don't know if i would call it THAT. it takes me years to write anything, and even what turns out is only half worth anything.

i hear and feel tons of music in me, but can never figure out how to express it in a language i can speak.

Is it possible that you are hearing this music without consciously realizing it, like in a coffeeshop while you are in line talking with someone, and it's coming out in your dreams?

That would be awesome.

could be, could be. i don't see how i ever could have heard the warhols' song prior to writing it. i should check and see when it was actually written.

This sounds very interesting Aubrey. I shall try and check out that song as soon as I get back to Phoenix.

You know, there ARE a lot of chord progressions that get used a lot in different songs, it COULD just be a coincidence. Is the melody the same too?

if nothing else, grab me on aim and i'll send it to you. granted, my guitar picking SO sucks, and i can't pick it nearly as good as they did. the melody is nothing like it, and in fact is quite repetitive.. basically repeating 'if i could sleep forever' over and over, bringing in different instruments to support the initical guitar picking. and granted, they don't switch into the different chord progression i had for the .. chorus? bridges? whatever they were.

but it's freaking weird. it even sounds like the capo is on the same fret, because it's in the same key.

What I want to know is: where was that line "I'm pissed!" subconsciously taken from?

dunno! you would have to ask scrumbles as he wrote the entire song!

i so need to get together with him, as he lives in this area now!
