Childish beliefs

I remember when I was a child, I used to believe that the theme song to every single show I watched was sung by the stars. "Without Us" was sung by Elise and Stephen Keaton, I was sure of it in my 4 year old mind. The theme song to "Greatest American Hero" was sung by the blonde, curly-haired hero, quite possibly in red tights. I could see him on a stage with a microphone, belting out "believe it or not IIIII"m walking on air, uh nevah thought I could feel so freee hee heeeeee", his cape billowing out behind him. (because, to my 4 year old brain, this was how songs were recorded.)

I remember believing this totally whole-heartedly.

were there any beliefs you had as a child that you remember believing with your entire being, that now seem well... just silly?

I spent my entire childhood genuinley believing that I was a princess of some country in Europe, and that I was hidden with my "parents" so that the rebels of my country couldn't kill me before I came of age.

I still kinda think that...

hee hee i also believed i was adopted, though not a princess. for some reason, i just kept disbelieving that i was actually RELATED to these people.

To this day, I have a hard time coming to terms with the fact that my clapping has absolutely no effect on whether or not Tinkerbell lives.

I thought that all the songs I heard on the radio were performed live by the band members every time they were played. So like if I heard a Beatles song, they were in New York at WABC doing "Yellow Submarine" or whatever. I sort of understood about the concept of radio waves but I didn't ever think that they might be playing records. :)

i think that i believed something similar to this, also.

i know that for a long time, i think i believed all tv shows were live. i think this stemmed that SOME of them would say that it was filmed in front of a LIVE studio audience.

or maybe it was that if they didn't say it was in front of a live studio audience, that the audience was sleeping.

i thought that there was a portal directly to hell underneath my bed and satan would reach out and grab my ankles in the same way.

I think the cat once clawed my feet from under the bed, which sparked my imagination.

-- do you want to change your journal font size? I was experimenting with alariya's layout and discovered how to do it. (Oh yeah, I need to go post that in communities for other haven users.) Anyway, let me know if you want the code.

I used to think that the laughing on sitcoms came from people laughing into their speakers on their televisions from home. So, there was no live studio audience laughing or a laughtrack. Nooo. Everybody was sitting in their house laughing into their speakers and it was all magically sent to the set of the show.

I used to sit inches from the TV and laugh hysterically into the speakers. ah.

I used to believe that life was conducted in black & white. Kinda like Pleasantville .

When I'd see film footage of events like WWII, etc., I thought that everything was truly happening in black & white and no one saw color.

When color TV was invented, THEN life started happening in color.

Maybe being newbies to the world of color is why everyone was so into pea green and orange decor during the 70's.

I used to believe this, too!!

The Wizard of Oz totally blew my mind.

I used to think every time I fell asleep on the couch watching tv that when I woke up in the morning and it was still dark, there was a witch in the room, and she didn't know I was there. so I had to keep really still, and I couldn't leave, and I'd lay there awake but terrified to go back to sleep or move.
Jul. 20th, 2005 06:29 pm (UTC)
ha ha, whyever in the world a witch?
Mar. 2nd, 2005 03:24 pm (UTC)
I believed that if I stood too close to the tv when the Twilight Zone theme was playing, I'd be sucked into the tv, living forever in zombie land:P
Jul. 20th, 2005 06:18 pm (UTC)
well, what sane child didn't? :)

Oh I will love to read all these comments, I can't right now because work is being a mistress with out compassion right now.

I so tottally love that song I use to go around singing it and then people would look at me and then give me the super strange look when I told thatm that I liked greatest American hero! :) Sadly I don't have that soung...

OK one stupid child belief:
You know when broadcast TV stations would actually go off the air? Well I had the believe that at that time the world stopped! Like everyone had to be alseep, the cars would stop people had to be at home and if you walked around at that time you would see everyone stopped and motionless like they were dead! We would hury up and go to sleep so we wouldn't be caught!!

Jul. 20th, 2005 06:17 pm (UTC)
ha ha! i could totally relate to that! i remember when i would wake up in the morning and the channels were still off the air, i would think that i was breaking a law or something.

I used to believe that "I Dream of Jeanie" and "Bewitched" were real and if I practiced hard enough and blinked my eyes enough I could grow up to be a real witch or genie and wear those costumes. Of course, by the time I got to watch either of those shows they were already reruns, but, as far as I was concerned, I just had to keep blinking.
Jul. 20th, 2005 06:10 pm (UTC)
i'm STILL blinking and twitching my nose, boy howdee.

I can only think of one.

Y'know how sometimes when people cough after drinking they'll say, "I guess it went down the wrong pipe"? When I was a kid I thought there were two different sections of the stomach: one for food and one for drinks. They both had different "pipes" leading into them. If your water went "down the wrong pipe" it's because you swallowed wrong and it went into the food section.

funny, i was thinking about your response at work the other day when i choked on some water.

I used to think that white and dark meat came from different kinds of chickens. I was surprisingly old before I realized that you never saw a leg or thigh made out of white meat, or a breast or wing made out of dark.
Jul. 14th, 2005 04:49 am (UTC)
that's so fantastic. i could so see myself thinking this as a kid, too.
