So time is running down on doing an article. It seems that every time I put forth an idea regarding what to write an article on, something quick and easy that I can pull out of me arse in a short amount of time for my first article without having to do eons of research, whomever I am speaking to immediately retorts with "yes, but are they gay friendly?!?"

SO. how in the world can you tell if a musician or band is gay friendly?

Bands/Musicians that are NOT Gay Friendly (despite still kicking ass):
Ted Nugent
Frank Sinatra
most heavy metal (yes, even Judas Priest)

if that's what they mean...unless they only want you writing about the following bands and their ilk:
Tragically Hip

well, Good Friend Joe said that he had wanted me because of my eclectic tastes in music, because I WOULDN'T write about the same freaking bands that have been written about a trillion times over.

can you just default to a gay or gayish band?

i think i'll mainly go with bands that i haven't heard any ANTI gayness towards. my brother and i have the same taste in music, generally, and since he's GAAAY, i'll rely on him as the insider ;)

Well, I'd start by googling the bend and the band member's names witht he words: Gay, lesbian, and the...insults derived and see if thee are any linkups and weather theya re positive or negative. Read up on them in 'zines like tintmixtapes if you can, too.

After hanging out on the Indie circuit, I'm tempted to say that a good portion are at least gay-friendly. Are you writing more about big acts, or more along the starving artists line? IF you want to get in touch with some L.A. scenesters, Paulie is a good place to start: http://www.clubltrain.com/

Good luck!

I know it's sorta old news, but you can talk about the duo bitch & animal, how/when they broke up, and what they are both doing now.

hee hee. as i've done so far, i pretty much write whatever i feel like writing, as long as i haven't heard anything stated that they gay bash.

Find out what bands your gay friends like?

I was referred to a band by a former friend...gay friend, but I don't know if they're gay friendly or if they're even someone you want to write about, but the band is Weakerthans. However, I believe they're classified as "Emo."

fantastic, i shall have to check them out then, thank you :)

i've just been writing on what i know and am familiar with (i lack enough organization in order to actually do something that requires research and such things.), and since none of them has ever said anything to piss off the gay/lesbian community...

i think that overall, that's what it boils down to. no news is good news. generally, if there is gay bashing going on by a musician, you DEFINITELY know about it.

Ask them if they have sex with members of the same sex. If they say yes, you can be almost positive that they are Gay Friendly.

perhaps you should inquire about the same species as well?

I don't really know what gay friendly is anymore. I know that Pansy Division is gay friendly, and maybe some emo and indie rock bands. I don't know.

I don't really, either. Music is music to me, I spose.

hee hee, that's a fabulous idea!

I'd define 'gay friendly' as 'not openly anti-gay.' I mean, it's music, at least 70% of the readers aren't gonna care if they've actually made a statement saying, "We think gayness is awesome," as long as they aren't bashing. I'd say pick a band, research to make sure they aren't anti-gay, and then go with it!

If he wants you to be eclectic then he can't limit you to those who have made official pro-gay statements.

that's what i was thinking on the whole matter. everyone keeps saying to me "oh, you write for a gay magazine, you MUST do articles on sleater kinney, erasure, and CHER!"

um, no. that's not why i was hired. besides, from reading the magazine, those artists are already beyond covered.
