i avoid country music like the black plague.

while at home sick this week, i was flipping through channels, trying to find something ANYTHING even remotely interesting to gaze upon.

i accidentally turned it to the country music station.

they were having this special on a band, called Nickel Creek, I think. Three youngins.

I was aghast.

The three 'kids' i wanna call them (looked all to be in their early 20's), two guys and a girl, only played three instruments: a mandolin, an acoustic guitar, and a violin. No rhythm section. No electric anything.

The MUSIC. wow. from a musician's stand point of view, feel free to call me cheesy, i was blown away by the three people on the most rudimentary instruments, tossing in a few harmonies... it sounded more celtic, to me, than country.

I've been trying to tell you for months that there IS some REALLY good music in the country world nowadays.

You never listen!

although my mommy DID raise me on Kiss and Black Sabbath.

I wouldn't call Nickel Creek totally country, because I don't believe it is. I think CMT/etc. are the only places they really can get airplay on.. they don't fit into the MTV genre, and VH1 might have played them at some point, but I can't remember.

You should check out their website, lots of music clips/etc... www.nickelcreek.com

i really liked what i saw. their genre, if you can truly put them in one, reminded me much of the sameish style of October Project... which is why i instantly realized why it was difficult for them to get airplay. they talked about playing live, and i couldnt' for the life of me picture them opening for tim mcgraw or faith hill.

Interesting factoid...
Didja know that most "Country" music is derived from Celtic origins?

yup -- It's true. When the Scots & Highlanders came over to the New World, they settled primarily in the Appalacian Mountains, since that environment was most familar to them. They started playing on homemade Bodrans, fiddles, and other instruments. Over time this evolved into "Bluegrass" which turned into Country.

Along the way they incorporated R&B, and other elements to create the modern Country Music.

I *LOVE* Bluegrass... Re-discovered it after a long hiatus about 8 years ago... Mmm...

Yewp. Nickel Creek is good shtuff. Chris Thile is one of the more in-demand mandolin players.

So sayeth he who also avoids country music like the plague but yet not only tolerates but almost likes some of the less (vocally) twangy bluegrass.

Yeah, I heard of them before. I think they were on some Tonight show last year, I forget. I liked 'em, too!!!

when i posted about it, i thought i was gonna get fingers pointed at me and erupted laughter as they chanted 'you like THEEEM?'

the response seems to be practically unanimous, tho, either you love them, or you haven't heard of them.
