we always HATE it when Bacci sleeps in this postion, because we (well, andrea and i at least, i can't speak for joel) always panic and think she's dead, since she's in the "deceased cat" position.

right after i took this picture, i stared hard at her chest for a long time to make sure i wasn't taking a picture of bacci the moment she died. she then sat up suddenly to chew at an itch, scaring the crap out of me in regular Botch style.

ha ha, actually she's really tiny for an adult cat, though i can see from how close up i took the picture, she looks GINORMOUS!

here's some pics i took after i got your response to help display that she IS a little girl:

it's her first summer being alive, so i'm sure the heat isn't helping ;)

and whenever she's sleeping in that position, she's BAAAARELY breathing, so we always panic. and wake her up. which i'm sure she appreciates.

posted some more pics of her in response to someone else's comment if you wish to see!

I actually have similar reactions whenever my dog seems too restful. I'll often blow air at his ears to see if they twitch just to be sure without waking him.

ha ha, i will have to try that instead of waking her up completely the next time.

though the look of grumpy sleepy anger on her little face is pretty funny.

Our bunny has a habit, when she wants to lie down, of suddenly stopping dead in her tracks and collapsing onto her side. Sue says it would scare the heck out of her if she hadn't read that bunnies do that before she actually saw it.

Same here with our cat. With her, it's a real possibility, as she's nearly 16 or something.

Holy shnikies! Thats just what fuzzy butt looks like... except a bit bigger.

this is her a long time ago when we first got her, she is bigger now and I swear she was laying out just yesterday.

Maybe not the best picture to compare with but you get the idea.

I remember when I was a kid we had a cat who would sleep on his back with his tounge hanging out, always looked dead! one day he was napping on the lawn in dead mode when I was trying to water the lawn. I sprayed him with a little water expecting a response of some kind, and nothing so then full on water and still nothing. I was so sure he was dead I ran to him and he open one eye and meowed like what, do you want something?

ha ha, that WOULD freak me the hell out. i have never known a cat to be impervious to the water treatment!!

I never knew that was the "deceased cat" position. Two of my cats sleep like that all the time.

i've seen too many cats die by laying in that position to NOT get wigged about it!
