*shrug* as for my "new" diet... i lived off of nothing but that stuff (meaning no sugar, no white flour, no sugar, no white rice, no pasta, no glazed foods, no bananas, pineapple, pears, or other sweet fruit, no potatos, corn, or carrots.)for a year and a half, so i'm fine with it. the only thing i'm not looking forward to again, is the following conversation:

"do you want a donut?"
"no thank you."
"aw cmon, are you on a diet?"
"no, i can't eat sugar."
"are you diabetic or something?"
"not exactly, i'm hypoglycemic."
"hypO or hypER?"
"hypo. i have low blood sugar."
"well, doesnt' that mean that you need more sugar?"
"*heavy sigh* no. if i eat anything with wheat or sugar in it or something too starchy, my system will kick out TOO much insulin, thusly dropping my blood sugar extremely low."

*sigh* in case you're not familiar with blood sugar levels, 'healthy' is considered a fasting blood sugar level of between about 80 and 130. my fasting blood sugar the day i had my glucose tolerance test was 59. after drinking their sugar water, it jumped to 110, then dropped to 49, where i almost passed out. when most diabetics get diagnosed, their blood sugar is at over 300 fasting.

Pardon me if I seem uneducated, but I am.

Were you on this "diet" before? Why did you stop, were your sugars more normal? I am quite interested, having been diagnosed with diabetes in January, and I have yet to gain any control over my BGs. They've been hella-crazy lately especially.

So inform the uneducated me! PLEASE! I am so sick of being sick!

i was on a hypoglycemic/diebetic diet for about a year and a half/two years.. then suddenly, i realized i could start getting away with certain things i never could... which led to other things... i dunno why it leveled out for awhile, but for almost a year, i could eat whatever the hell i wanted to, then suddenly, one day *poof*, even just potatos make me sick. which, is good, i spose, cuz in the year that i could eat whatever, i put on freaking 30 freaking pounds!

diabetes runs in my mom's side of the family, but until my mom was diagnosed, only the men had it. although i have hyPOglycemia compared to hyPERglycemia (low blood sugar compared to diabetes, at my fasting glucose tolerance testing, my fasting blood sugar was 59), the diet is pretty much the same. there is a LOT of misconception running around online, it's generally best if you check out some books on it. lol - i bought Diabetes for Dummy's for my mom, cuz she still eats whatever she wants - and then wonders why she's sick all the time.

i've also noticed that sometimes, my blood sugar will be harder to control depending upon where in my menstrual cycle i am.. sometimes, it freaks out when i'm ovulating, sometimes when i'm perioding... either way, it gets so bad, i can't eat ANY grains and can only eat meat and some veggies...

it sucks, it truly does. i feel your pain.

I love that Diabetes for Dummies book. I am also taking a nutrition class right now as part of my nursing program, and that has been really helpful. I am supposed to be taking a diabetes education class from my wonderful health care providers, but I have been putting it off. I am still in denial, I think.

I wonder about the PMS thing. I had a depo shot three months ago, and haven't had my period in that long, and I just got it the other day. Perhaps that has been screwing things up. The worst part of being a woman, I tell ya, is having that damn thing every month when you KNOW you are never gonna have any more kids. Thanks, Eve! (Got some residual PMS lurking here, LOL)

Thanks for the info, though. I will keep things in check!

lol - i know.. it's like 'um, can't we just shut this thing off until we KNOW we're ready to have kids?"

yeah, it sucks, because it seems that so many teeny tiny stupid things can send our blood sugar into turmoil..
