A lady came through my line the other day with her 5 year oldish daughter.

as i was ringing her up, her daughter started whistling. the mother fwipped around and yelled at her to stop RIGHT NOW! i had a brief thought that the daughter had been whistling all day and annoying the hell out of her mother, but mommy then said "only boys whistle!" the mother then turned back to me and looked BEYOND embarassed. she apologized to me, saying 'she has big brothers....'

i just smiled politely at her.

um.. when did WHISTLING become gender-based? did i miss a memo?

i wonder if the mother would have had a coronary if she had been in the store two nights ago when another mother was allowing her daughter to spit all over the sales floor.

It's official... Bush just announced that whistling is hereby banned by federal law to be heard from any female US citizen.

I bet that girl grows up to be a)mentally disturbed, b)a world-class whistler, doing things like county fairs and the Globetrotter's theme, c)an expatriate moving to Canada, or d)all of the above.

and two nights ago we had a mother who allowed her daughter to spit all over the sales floor and another daughter to chomp gum and stick it on the counter.

delish.

i'm sure the whistling mother would have had an entire litter of kittens if she would have witnessed that.

either the woman is moronic, or she said that to get the girl to stop, since she's not a boy.

i fucking love your stories about people at work. they always crack me up :)

personally i find that to be one fo the goofiest things i have ever heard....BUT...
according to my boyfriend, during what would be around our grandparent's time, whistling was considered unlady like. it was something that only men/boys did.

Ummmmm... yeah..... Did'ya get the memo? As far as I knew, everyone whistles... except those of us like me who physically can't, for one reason or another... Does whisteling through your teeth count?

the mother was very young, too, like mid to late twenties? i mean, i know that's not YOUNG for a mother by any means, but i was flabberghasted to see a mother that was rather young and hip looking (her hair was cute, she was dressed nice in like a lime green collared shirt under a form fitting leather jacket and pin stripe pants) be SO weird about things like that.

makes me wonder what the girl will be like when she grows up, and what other things her mother is preventing her from experiencing!
