WOKE UP this morning with the craving of braaaaaaaains (and the inability to decipher when my capslock is left on.) for some odd reason, i keep hitting the 'reset' button on my alarm instead of the 'sleeper' button. SLIGHT difference when you want to get up in twenty minutes instead of twenty hours.

freaking shakira is haunting me. lucky that my lips.. something something.. spill kisses like a fountain.

going to scrumbles and 0vary's today? yes? yes? text me if it is a no go, though per your permission, Ben, the next time I see you, you will SO get a flogging.

mwa ha ha.

as UTTERLY DISGUSTING as it is, instant coffee is BRILLIANT!! i don't have to brew a pot or deal with all of that, which is perfect for the mornings i just have enough time to get up, do a shot, and go. (for example, mornings where i hit the reset button on my radio.)

I'm a big fan of Charlie FM. 97-1. You see, this is a radio station, for those of you who do not live near me, that plays anything. and i mean ANYTHING. this is the radio station that wakes me up in the morning, you see. most of the time, they play normal music, i.e. classic hits from the 70's, 80's, 90's and oh oh's. rarely r&b (YES!), rarely country (mostly YES!). every once in awhile, though, they like to toss something random in, just to remind us that yes, they WILL PLAY ANYTHING.

i had just turned the volume on my clock radio up because i noticed that the music was soft enough to keep me sleeping, but loud enough to corporate itself into my dreams. (hence a dream where i gathered all my coworkers into a meeting so that i could stand on a case of paper and sing "bohemian rhapsody".) one of THEE first times that the radio went off after that, it blared extremely loud MARCHING BAND music. some fight song. i was sleeping on my belly, and pushed myself up frantically into some semblance of a pushup as i looked around frantically, my brain going "WHAAAAAAAA?!???" it took me a full 30 seconds to realize where i was and what just happened.

other random things that i have been woken up with. raisin? you'll enjoy the fact that on not one, but two separate occasions, I have been woken up by "Disco Duck" from Mickey Mouse Disco. for the most part, other than being VERY pleased with random cool songs from Days of Yore that I had forgotten existed, the only other extremely odd thing to have woken me up was a karaoke version of some song. No one singing, mind you, but it was the song without any of the main vocals, which confused my sleeping mind greatly.

Lucky that my lips not only mumble
They spill kisses like a fountain

We have one of those stations here in Detroit (Doug FM). I dunno about it. It's been on the air here for about a year, and even though I didn't like the former format, I guess I just knew too many friends of friends who worked at the station who lost their job when the change happened (there's no air talent). Not to mention I was going to school to become a radio dj.

for the longest time, that was a major ambition of mine, too! until i started talking to a lot of dj's, and, like you, had a lot of them lose their job on a whim.

i think i went back to rock star then ;)

It's a pretty volatile business. Formats change. There's really nothing to assure you of having a job tomorrow. As the saying goes, you're only as good as your last break.

And the pay is shit.

yah... you really have to do it because you love it, not for the money! (or the fame... or the babes... though the stalker stories really are priceless.)

in talking to a few of my dj friends, aw, yesh. one of my favorites hosted overnights in an awful area of phoenix, and she told me about how freaky it was whenever someone rang their doorbell or knocked on the door.

that's also what helped to change my mind! not that aspiring rock star pays much more.. in fact it's like i'm PAYING to be a rock star, no?

(radio person here)

I love the idea of Dougs and Bobs and Jacks and all... because my musical tastes are so random.

I feel bad about all the DJs who are losing their jobs. (Like me.)

(initiate pity party!)

i adored, too, until i realize that they played the SAME random stuff over and over... making it not really that random. pfeh. so i went back to my alternarock station, though reception is really bad right now with the weather.

Sorry I haven't left a comment or talked to you in a while, but I jst wanted to let you know I'm ALIVE and kickin and I'll be around more often. Glad all is going well and I hope things work out with that whole "reset" button thing LOL

BRAIN BLEACH! Now I have disco duck circling in my head like a turd in the toilet, hellllp!
Nov. 8th, 2006 05:48 am (UTC)
would it be better to get disco mickey mouse going through your head? for some reason, whenever i think of that song, it morphs into the theme song for Danger Mouse.

I miss doing this when I was a college DJ -- I would slap on stuff like the Dead Milkmen's, You'll Dance To Anything!!

Or one night when it was really late and I accidentally played track 1 of Sisters of Mercy's Vision Thing album instead of track 2 (track 1 is the song, Vision Thing... part of the chorus is mother fucker)

Those were the days! But as has been mentioned, no pay. College DJ was voluntary w/o pay, just experience. I can run a board with delay in my sleep, though! Hrm... I need to make sure I can still find my full FCC license, now that I think about it.

did you ever end up finding your license?

ha - did anyone call in about the no no words in the song? i remember a couple of times listening to the radio first thing in the morning and hearing curse words that were accidentally not censored.
Nov. 10th, 2006 03:02 am (UTC)
No, I don't think I found my license - if I did, I don't know where it is now.

I did get called for playing Vision Thing -- but it was a call along the lines of, "That song rocked!"

Its Jack up here too. The corporate monkeys generally call it the Jack format, and it's pretty much anything that charted ever thrown into a blender. It's an ABC radio vehicle, and it's pretty much syndicated from a single national studio and pretends to be local.

ah. silly corporations. and here i thought portland was being ingenius for once.
