hey, quick question:

got an old computer from someone b/c they were gonna toss it but i think its salvagable. so, here's the deal.

when we start it up, it turns on and goes to the menu that asks if you want to start in safe mode or normal windows mode. if you click either of them, it will take you (sometimes) to the windows screen but as its loading the computer will restart.

um...what do we do? is there a command to make the computer go to a dos setup so we can format the harddrive? any suggestions are fantastic.

thank you.

/bows.

If it will boot from the CD-ROM drive drop a full install version of Windows into it, reboot the computer and you should be able to wipe the drive during setup.

Totally.

If there's data on the drive where Windows is installed that you want to save, you'll need to take other measures to save it before wiping the hard drive.

It can be done, for instance, by taking the hard drive out and hooking it up to a working computer, and copying its files.

This sounds like the problem my friend's computer was experiencing. If the problem comes back soon after reinstalling Windows (and it wasn't caused by installing a certain driver, for instance), the hard drive may be bad.

Sounds like bad drivers or corrupt files, I'm assuming this is 98 right? The thing is if you are going to format and install windows then you don't need to use anything on the drive, your cd or installation set should have the neccessary software to boot from the instalation media. From there you can repartation, format and such.

If you do want to save any data on there tell me and I might be able to hep you, also I might be able to send you something to help you check the drive for bad sectors and repair them if possible.

The other guys have pretty much covered it. You should be able to download a win 98 repair floppy or win 98 boot floppy. Either one of those will give you the option of formating the hard drive. Either that, or boot from CD and follow the steps to either repair or install the new version of windows.
