i have many people from Russia on my friends list, and i just wanted to give a shout out to you guys. everyone i have met from your country thus far has been absolutely wonderful and polite. a couple of you had asked what i thought of Russia, and... well, i never knew what to think, to tell you the truth. but if everyone over there is as kind and sweet as you have all been to me? fantastic country :)

i don't really know much about your country at all. i mean, i grew up in the 80's during the cold war when they would frequently show movies like Red Dawn and Hunt for Red October. since the cold war has ended, i still feel uninformed, as every thing i have seen has pretty much only shown TONS of snow. so basically, i guess i should say that i know nothing at all? maybe i shall do some research to see what i can find out, or if you would be interested in sharing experiences with me?

but in the mean time, thank you so much for joining me on my journal, i'm very happy to have you! i'm sorry if i haven't responded to many comments, i just like to ... well, i'm quite behind on my comments, to tell you the truth, though i'm getting a TAD better!

The 'snatch?' I don't even know what that is, to be honest ^^;; It's just personal experience, there was a time when like every Russian LJer invaded space_ghetto, and then proceeded to invade MY LJ when I made a post about it! Crazy ;-;

The cold war ended when rock-n-roll came to Russia in 1980-s. Thanks to rock music the new generation was formed. But intelligent people have always been open to english-speaking world. Nabokov wrote in English, Brodsky was beautifully translated. And they understood that knowing Russia in the world is not only "Ra-Ra-Rasputin, lover of the Russian Queen". KGB and now FSB now and then tries to find enemies abroad - it`s the Russian fascism. But for normal people know that Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Doors, Janis Joplin and Joan Baez will live forever. As for me, I am going to record my reading Woody Guthrie`s book "The train bound to glory" on CD and share it with my best friends.
I`ve got a question - if I want to understand american culture, what names I have to know and what books to read first? What do you think?

I am from Denmark.

During the cold war we were a part of NATO and such, but since we have always been very left wing a lot of people sympathized more with Soviet.(Not that Soviet was actually a Socialist state)
You could call the system in the Scandinavian countries for reformed socialism as such it is adapted to capitalism, but we pay extreme taxes and have huge social benefits. People can say what they will about a country like that, but it works. We have some of highest living standarts in the world almost no homeless and poor people. (So don't go thinking taxes are all bad)

I must be frank, I don't like the american system or the soviet, neither do I have a good impression that things are very good in Russia at the moment.

I have one person on my lj that has been a very very good friend from russia. I think she is amazing.

I also work with one russian from San Jose, CA. And another one in my office.

I would like to learn to at least read and write russian. After all, all of them speak and can read english. I should at least make an effort to learn their language.
