cleaned my desk thoroughly last night and am still working on my room today. i opened up a unicorn trunk that santa gave me when i was 10 years old or younger - i've lugged that thing with me everywhere throughout the years, throughout my many moves through many states. i was sad to discover that a candle or something had melted in there, coating my preschool graduation gown, baby blanket, and other childhood tidbits in a weird waxy substance.

i also came across a bunch of old photos that i felt like sharing, so i shall spam your friends list with old photos.

the first two are scrumbles back in the day that we were in The Vacant Stairs together. they were taken in our TINY practice space at ASU.. geesh. four years ago? four and a half.

me and gilby! back when i had hair and was a party girl. i can guarantee that at least a cup of alcohol had been consumed at this point.

the date on the back of this says 12/23/91, which would have put me at 16 1/2 years old. i'm on the right (of course), the girl on the left is julie. our mothers met when they were having us - they were roommates in the hospital. Julie is an hour and a half older than me. the man is her father. before her and i got together the day we took this picture, we hadn't seen each other since we were about 8 years old or younger. it was eerie because we were SO MUCH ALIKE.

my first love, Chad, at my 17th surprise birthday party. i'm so rockin' in my Testament shirt.

beware: more random stuff to come.

p.s. - how long are you supposed to keep paystubs and bills?

LOL! I love seeing the old photos. You were totally rockin'! Jim totally would have dated you in high school!

Oh, and I keep my bills and pay stubs until I'm done filing my taxes for that year. I generally keep it for 2 in case something goes wrong with my taxes.

I do know that you're supposed to keep any paperwork you filed with your taxes and your tax returns themselves for 7 years, although to be safe, I keep mine for 10.

i seem to recall it was three years..

the IRS wants you to hold onto anything related to tax filings
for three years.
but bank statements and gas bills don't need to stick around that long.
i just keep them for a year on the off chance there's a billing error
i've got lots of paperwork to prove i'm all paid up.

i have this year's bills and pay stubs in file folders.
i have last year's stuff tied up with twine in a box.
so, come this january,
the 2005 stuff gets chucked,
the 2006 stuff gets tied up and stored,
and the 2007 stuff will go in the file folders.
if i had a house,
i would keep stuff longer
cause i could throw it in the attic or something,
but with rental space
i just don't have room for that much old paperwork.

I think only for a year unless you're completely OCD. *lol*

Great pictures! Sorry to hear about the candle mishap. :(

Depends on how much paranoia is present. To satisfy the worst paranoia, find out the state's statute of limitation with regards to uncollected debts. Last time I checked, Texas has like a 4 year statute of limitation. That means if the debt has not been collected within 4 years, I can throw it out. Credit agencies tend to report stuff for 7 years (if negative) and 10 years (if positive).

Having a record of things helps any case in court, if, for whatever reason, a case is created and goes to court.

For IRS related stuff, I would say keep it forever. But then again, I do not trust them any -- especially after the great tax cut that I'm still paying off well into next year (the first time I have ever had to pay taxes -- and it was that much).
