Dec. 27th, 2006

my favorite thing that someone overheard recently was what my brother overheard while at work at 630 am:

"how many babies DOES it take to make a bottle of baby oil?"

overheard today at jack in the box (by the manager and employees, no less.):

I can tell i'm aging because i was teetering right on the edge of being offended that the people making my food were screaming this at each other with no care for who was overhearing. i was waiting for the guy with the 4 year old boy to say something, but i wasn't about to complain while they were making my food. i've worked in enough fast food joints to know that if an employee doesn't give a rat's ass if you hear them screaming sexually transmitted diseases across the building, then they certainly won't mind adding a bit of spit (or worse) to your food.

received some of the dark tower stephen king books in the mail today, due to your recommendations, as well as the devil wears prada. i haven't seen the movie, but wanted the book as one of my classmates in my improv classes came up to me (Larie!) and said that she envisioned me as the roommate and couldn't get me out of her head whenever she read it, because she felt i WAS the roommate. she confessed that she didn't know that much about me, but from what she did know, she suspected that i had a personality like the roommate. so i shall read it.

other books received lately (meaning: last three monthsish):

those laurell k. hamilton books
mercedes lackey - diana tregarde books (3 in 1)
r.a. salvatore's dark elf trilogy (3 in 1)
eddings' belgariad part i and ii (5 in 2, methinks.)
hitchiker's guide trilogy (5 in 1)
gaiman's coraline
gaiman/pratchett - good omens
terry brooks - word and the void (3 in 1)
brooks' heritage of shannara (4 in 1)
brooks' shannara (3 in 1)
feist's something something war (midkemia, prince arutha, etc.), all 4 books
the griffon trilogy by lackey
the arrow trilogy by lackey
the last herald mage trilogy by lackey
tom robbins - jitterbug perfume and... something else

all i can say is, hooray for half.com and for scifi book club's no payment until march + buy one/get one free deals. i can finally rebuild some of my collection i had when i left all of them in phoenix (except the jordan books because that's what i was reading at the time. sigh.) i would have replaced williams' memory/sorrow/thorn books, too, but i read those right before i left phoenix and haven't had a craving again yet. (but it's still one of my top... three? series evur. well, maybe not three. death gate cycle is super number one, and i'll always have a spot in my heart for the shannara books, as they're what got me into the fantasy genre. well, maybe top three.)

so, i have some reading to do, yup.

Smart move to not say anything while those folks were preparing your food. I think I'd have said something when the food was safely in my hands, though...

because it's the only place that i can go to grab lunch during my half hour that is close enough to actually give me a bit of downtime, i figured that i would hold my tongue for now, and if i run into the store manager or the ability to talk about it presents itself, i could casually bring it up. i also figured that if the crew were being gigantic asses, they'll also manage to get themselves in trouble eventually, and i'll be saved the possible future wrath. "hrm. girl said you were screaming gonorrhea." "oh? only one girl in the lobby at the time, and she was the one from officemax. ptui."

i'm truly surprised the father of the 4 year old didn't say anything, as i could almost envision the boy saying "daddy, what's gone-o-ree-uh?"

I would give my left lung right now for a fajita pita, bacon and cheese potato wedges, and 2 tacos, all from Jack In The Box.

Yanno? Not sure if the one by me still serves potato wedges. Though I think that I'm allergic to potatoes and never really liked them, anyway, so...

I really miss their chicken bowls, over the rice, with the free egg roll.

absofreaking lutely, PLUS they serve breakfast 24/7, which other fast food places do not do. On one hand, I'm grateful that there's one close to my work, but on the other, since I've been eating practically every meal there during my 3 1/2 years of working at OfficeMax, I'm quite sick of their food, no matter how random it is.

I have every lackey book dealing with valdemar, hawk brothers, etc, and I want to get the second five kingdoms book since I loved fairy godmother.

Now that I'm reading at school (book 7 of Wheel of Time), before bed (Anita Blake), and during the day (*cough* Merry Gentry *ahem*) instead of watching a ton of television, I'm finding that I'm finally making it through quite a few books. Granted, I SHOULD be doing my homework, but..

Have you read the enchanted forrest series by Patricia Wrede? (searching for dragons, talking to dragons, dealing with dragons) I know it's classified as YA, which never stops me, but they are great books.
Jan. 25th, 2007 06:33 am (UTC)
Oooh, I haven't, I should check them out. Thanks for the heads up!
Dec. 28th, 2006 03:40 pm (UTC)
See, I'm using this list as books I need to read, as I haven't read a lot of them. *sigh*

I need to read more.

I've discovered some fun ones in there, and have finally gotten to the point again where I want to spend a lot of time reading instead of doing other things. Unfortunately, "other things" not only consists of watching t.v. and being on the net, but also homework.

"how many babies DOES it take to make a bottle of baby oil?"

this made me laugh loudly at my computer and have to explain it to my co-workers what i was laughing at... thanks for the giggle. :)

I'm so very sad that I never thought of it first, it's that good. ;)

Tad William's memory/sorrow/thorn series, that's what initially hooked us up, isn't it?! ;-) yay for fantastic fantasy writing.

terry brooks - word and the void is another of my top favs, really thought-provoking and suspenseful. have you already read it?
Dec. 28th, 2006 10:09 pm (UTC)
not yet, but i've been a fan of his work, so i figured i would give it a try. well, a fan of the shannara books, i haven't read any of the magic kingdom for sale series (though i'm slowly building up my collection of those, too, so i can read them.)

good to know someone whose taste i value likes them - i always hate getting books for the first time without any prior knowledge.

The baby oil quote reminds me of the line from The Addams Family where the Girl Scouts are selling cookies, and Wednesday asks if the cookies are made from real Girl Scouts!
Jan. 25th, 2007 06:34 am (UTC)
bah ha! It does, indeed. I should watch those movies again.

It's not your age...

It's that you have standards and class!
Jan. 25th, 2007 06:35 am (UTC)
There you go! The guy making the comments still works there (a hick looking guy with the name of - i shit you not - Bud), but I haven't seen the other ones since.

I like the Dark Tower series. Now that I've got all the books, I plan to sit down and read them all again. I might even read them aloud to myself... something I've always kind of wanted to do with the right story.
Jan. 25th, 2007 06:36 am (UTC)
I've sometimes read the girl parts aloud, I've noticed, maybe as a way of submerging myself more into the character.
Jan. 25th, 2007 11:46 pm (UTC)
Yeah, I sometimes do that with Eddie Dean parts.
Jan. 25th, 2007 06:36 am (UTC)
I really like that icon of you, by the way.
Jan. 25th, 2007 11:48 pm (UTC)
Yeah, I like it. That was mhow I rang in 2007 :)
Dec. 29th, 2006 02:15 pm (UTC)

Or so my friend Kevin always says.
Jan. 25th, 2007 06:37 am (UTC)
Oh, how I wish I could remember what Peter Griffin said his son was dying of in that one episode.

I still haven't read those, but I recently bought them all, so maybe it's just a matter of time..
