I have no subject line as the tv is not on.

Back from the dentist.

This was my first cleaning or anything in four and a half years. Other than a VERY aggressive cleaning back when I lived in Phoenix (Feb '03, I think my last dental visit was), I haven't been to the dentist for anything since I was 18 or 19 - thirteenish years. (The visit in Feb of 03 consisted of going in and having an EXREMELY painful, fast cleaning by a male dentist that spoke almost no English. He couldn't answer any questions and didn't want to do anything beyond that - but said my dental didn't cover the routine cleaning, so I had to shell out $350 or so.) THAT being considered, I didn't do too badly today.

I DO have periodontitis, which is sort of the next step of gingivitis, where you start losing bone mass. It hasn't reached a critical point yet, so it can be fixed over time. I have another appointment on Oct 3rd (10/3 at 10:30!) to get numbed on the right side and do a deep gum cleaning, as well as one of the three fillings I need. (The other two will be done when I go to get the left side deep cleaned.) This, if I had no insurance, would cost me about $1400. With my dental insurance, I'll only pay about 20%. In the long run, they want to extract my wisdom teeth (yes, i'm 32 and still have the suckers) and apply braces. We'll see how it goes or how I'm doing financially when that gets done. I know plenty of adults that got braces in their 30's.

So, although I feel I floss more than the average American (2 - 5 times weekly), I'm still a naughty, naughty girl and will PAY.

I want to eat and go to sleep now, but I'm going girlie shopping with Lori and Liz. Not many other girls get to say they go, uh... plastic date shopping with supervisors at work.

Wages FINALLY getting not garnished (for now), plus a vacation day, plus holiday pay has resulted my paycheck in being over $300 more than it has been for months. Rawk.

While I wait for them to get off work, I shall cook me some Morning Star artichoke veggie bites and watch some blasted teevee.

I've gone about the same amount of time without dental work ... need to schedule something soon, I think.

I just wish I could get over the shuddering that happens with metal scraping BONE. Ugh. Everything else I could handle but THAT.

I had periodontis once. I brushed with baking soda dipped in peroxide for a week or two and it was better. It tastes worst than anything you've ever dreamed of, but it's effective. My gums are very healthy now.

Oh, and not to brag or anything, but I floss twice a day. I'm sort of obsessed. When my arm was broken, that's what I missed doing most... Sad. I know.

After all of this, methinks I'm going to be a tad obsessive, too. They said to get something to where i can floss while I'm watching tv or reading a book before bed or something, but it gives me the heebeejeebees to do so NOT in front of a mirror - I hate flying blind!

I absolutely hate the feeling of anything between my teeth so I have floss in my bathroom upstairs off the bedroom, in the downstairs bathroom and in my purse. That covers it! I usually floss right after shower but before moisturizing so my hands don't taste icky. Then again right after dinner. After lunch too if I eat something stringy.

I use something very similar to this: http://www.smileclub.com/viewItem.asp?idProduct=10321

No fuss, no muss, and you don't need a mirror to use them.

That's what my hygienist recommended, so that I could just hang out, watch teevee, and floss. I may invest in one some time next week, when I go to get all the other supplies they recommended (a particular Colgate Total toothpaste and an antibacterial wash). I was going to today after work, but I was too pooped to deal with walking ALL the way ACROSS the PLAZA to go to Target before walking home.

I drive from one job location to another as a copier repairman so I don't carry a toothbrush with me during the day to brush after I have lunch. But I carry one of those floss handles and floss right after lunch. If I forgot to floss before I left the house in the morning I'll floss in the car. Either way, there is one pair of molars that are set just far enough apart that if I have beef or steak I have to floss them. Chicken, fish, anything with a fine grain, no problem. Coarse grain meat... I have to floss.

Oh, yes, I have a couple of teeth like that, too - when I floss, it's like I remove an entire buffalo from between the two and it amazes me how I don't feel all of it loitering there.

I need to get to the periodontist. Hopefully I won't need too much major wowrk. I'm glad a gum cleaning is available though. Though I'm terrified about the price as I have no insurance. 350 for a cleaning is a rip off. My old place did a cleaning for about 70 and was very used to working with people who did not have insurance.

Do you have gum loss near your teeth? Like recession of the gums? I have that on 2 teeth.

Re: Q
I have that. It comes from brushing too hard.

Re: Q
Hmm, that could be my problem in addition to the ginvitis. I'm so *glad* my dentists have never mentioned that.

Re: Q
Mine suggested I get an electric tooth brush. He said that even the "Crest Spin Pro" or whatever is fine. It doesn't have to be Sonicare or whatever (which is what I splurged on). Then you just let the brush do the work for you. It brushes as hard as you're supposed to.

Re: Q
I almost bought one when I went to buy one last time. I think I keep buying tooth brushes, though, and when it comes time to switch to the new one, I don't know if the ones I find to use are ones I bought or ones the roommates bought. I can never remember what the things look like minutes later.

Re: Q
Well, buy pink....unless...they buy pink? o.O ahem.

I don't know about these things lol

I need to go to the dentist, but my stupid appointment isn't until OCTOBER. ugh.

Re: Q
I've always had that here and there throughout my teeth, but apparently, it's from the gingivitis/periodontitis that causes the gums to recede. If I remember correctly, it's something like that your teeth get a build up of plaque under the gum line and your already annoyed gums have nothing to cling to anymore. Hence, awhile after you get the deep gum cleaning, it gets a bit better.

I still need to break out the toothpicks, though, so that I can try to get my gums totally healthy. I brush with the toothpaste they tell me, I floss (about every other day, not as often as I should) and rinse with Listerine, like they say, and they're still angry.

ACK! Well, hopefully none of the damage is permanent and they'll get you straightened out. I'm pretty lucky. I don't go to the dentist as often as I should (I have no dental insurance either), but I do try to take care of them on my own.

Hooray for extra in the paycheck!! :D

Your wages are not getting garnished? That is good news! What happened?
Sep. 18th, 2008 03:37 am (UTC)
It was during an off time - they'll garnish me for 60 days, then I'll get about 1.5 months of respite, then two more months of -25%. My check this Friday is going to be #3 in the current run of five garnished checks. I plan on getting caught up and then doing whatever the hell I can to get it to stop. I've been lazy long enough.
