you guessing? no, that's not it. *waits* ... *GASP!* what kind of girl do you think i AM?!?! noooo, that's not it, either!!!

give up?

i went to the Christmas party last night at my friend pat's house... it was wonderful, having the 4 of us back together again (me, pat, joe, and peyton), for the first time in almost a year, when the four of us used to be inseparable.

anyhoo. for some reason, joe thought i wasn't going to show up to his parents house for Christmas, so he brought my gift.

i almost started crying when i opened it.

first, was a card that read, simply, "aubrey, follow your dreams. i will be right behind you."

in the box? a MANDOLIN.

i hadn't even remembered mentioning to him that my biggest goal this coming year was to get a mando and learn how to play it proficiently, to help the band (and myself) take a bit more of the musical turn that we had been interested in taking. i had totally fallen in love with the mandolin this year, and all the wonderful melodies that come out of it, that i hadn't known possible. i had been counting down the paychecks until i could afford to get one, even if it was just a chincy one, mainly just for the purposes of having something to learn and practice on, so that when the financial day came, i could POUNCE on a good one to love and to cherish for ever and ever.

i sat up until almost 4 am, playing with the thing, and seeing all the wonderful noises that could come out of it (i'm certain my neighbors thank me for this), after learning how to tune the thing (pey? it's a LOT more simpler than we thought...)

my fingertips HUUUURT. but it's a good hurt.

joe's been one of my bestest friends since we were 14, and he's making almost freaking $100K a year, so i know a mando didn't put him out TOO much ;)

i had never even held one until that night, and didn't know what to do with it, so i just sat on the couch all night, hugging the thing *lol*

i'm totally in love with this instrument... i'm thinking that if each musician was meant to 'click' with one instrument more than others, this is MINE.

No matter what he makes...he put a lot of thought into buying you the mandolin.

I love the mandolin...it's one of my favorite instruments, but aren't all the strings upside down...the opposite of a guitar? I can play guitar, but for some reason, the mandolin and I just don't do well together.

So like I said...learn it well, and then play for me, so I can enjoy the sounds of this incredible instrument!

lucky girl!

no, the lowest pitched one is at the top, just like a guitar. it has eight strings instead of six, and it's set up with two pairs of strings close by each other, so that you have to press two strings down with one finger, which, i'm finding, is harder on the fingertips than guitar strings!!

course, since you've played mandolin before, you know that *blush*

and i'm so beyond thankful for the thought and effort put into the gift, it definitely meant the world to me!

hhhmmm...what instrument am I thinking of then. I know there's a string instrument...just like the guitar, except the strings are reversed.

Yeah...I remember the callouses...OUCH! I've been reading about your poor fingers, but unfortunately, the only way to get those callouses is to keep playing.

Try rubbing "Bag Balm" on them. It's actually sold in feed stores because it is a salve that they rub on cows udders to keep them from being irrated by milking. But you might find something similar in baby stores because they use the same stuff on little babies behinds...lol...

It will sooth your fingers without damaging the callous...it's an old musician's trick, and it works wonders...it also makes your hands soft and smooth...hehehe...

I got lots of strange remedies...

Now for your fingertip calloused voodoo dance...*shaking baby rattle and chanting...OOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMMMM..........*

There...that should help!

Now cure me dammit! hehehe

lol - thanks!!! soaking them in hot water as i was doing dishes huuuurt. ;) it's like i dunno. they feel like when you're sick with a cold for a long time and your nose is red, glowing, peeling, chapped, dry, and you feel like it's 5 times its normal size..

my nose is chapped, red, glowing, peeling, dry, and twice it's normal size...my lips are chapped, my throat hurts...I'm sick!!!

Noqw get some bag balm and rub it on your fingertips and the callouses will smooth out, be less painful, and still retain the callouses that you need.
