you guessing? no, that's not it. *waits* ... *GASP!* what kind of girl do you think i AM?!?! noooo, that's not it, either!!!

give up?

i went to the Christmas party last night at my friend pat's house... it was wonderful, having the 4 of us back together again (me, pat, joe, and peyton), for the first time in almost a year, when the four of us used to be inseparable.

anyhoo. for some reason, joe thought i wasn't going to show up to his parents house for Christmas, so he brought my gift.

i almost started crying when i opened it.

first, was a card that read, simply, "aubrey, follow your dreams. i will be right behind you."

in the box? a MANDOLIN.

i hadn't even remembered mentioning to him that my biggest goal this coming year was to get a mando and learn how to play it proficiently, to help the band (and myself) take a bit more of the musical turn that we had been interested in taking. i had totally fallen in love with the mandolin this year, and all the wonderful melodies that come out of it, that i hadn't known possible. i had been counting down the paychecks until i could afford to get one, even if it was just a chincy one, mainly just for the purposes of having something to learn and practice on, so that when the financial day came, i could POUNCE on a good one to love and to cherish for ever and ever.

i sat up until almost 4 am, playing with the thing, and seeing all the wonderful noises that could come out of it (i'm certain my neighbors thank me for this), after learning how to tune the thing (pey? it's a LOT more simpler than we thought...)

my fingertips HUUUURT. but it's a good hurt.

violin is my next instrument! >) maybe. my brother had one for a short amount of time when i was a teen, when he was thinking about playing it in band, and i tried using his book to learn to play it, and it was quite difficult.

course, since i've been learning a lot more geetar playing, that might help a tad (i know it certainly did where my mandolin is concerned!)

My maternal grandfather was a concert violinist but I never knew him. I took up the violin in his honour from age 7 to about 17. I stopped after High School and haven't done much with it since. I love the sound of good strings though.

I've been playing guitar since I was 13-ish but I sort of come and go with it now. That's why I need lessons again. Just to get m back up to snuff.

I may take lessons once i get caught up financially, but for now, am relying on self-taught-ism ;)

Re: Violin is my next instrument!
Hey there!

That is a really cool present! I'm so happy for you! My mom has a mandolin & took lessons for a while... one thing her instructor told her is that the fingering is the same on the mandolin & violin, so if you can play one, you can play the other! Might be an interesting theory to try out!

I'll write more soon.... take care & have fun out there!

KALINDI MY LOOOOOVE! *grin* i wouldn't mind taking lessons a bit down the road to help me perfect my technique, but in the meantime, since i'm miss broke-pants, i'll just skip along merrily an dtwang it the only way i know how ;)

hope that everything on your end in floreedah is going splendidly and that you're having a wonderful holiday season!
